About the Manufacturer

Creativity and technology, glamour and functionality, quality and innovation: a combination of extraordinary factors together with a strategic vision of distribution has contributed to the lasting success of Kartell. By cultural and entrepreneurial choice, since its origins in 1949 the Italian manufacturer has chosen to characterize itself as the market leader in the production of designers articles which use technology and plastic materials. This choice requires a great understanding of materials and transformation technology. A leader in furniture design, Kartell addresses an international audience with a collection unique in originality, variety, size, and range.

Environmental Info

Contrary to the common idea, products in plastic materials are highly ecological for the reason that they can be recycled (with the exception of polyurethane, little used in Kartell seating). In addition, the use of plastics reduces the need for living plants, such as trees, which are costly and take years to replace. In order to simplify the recycling process, the various components of Kartell furniture can be easily separated and reduced to elements made of one single material. Moreover, the plastic parts of each product carry, clearly printed, an identification mark to determine the correct classification of the seven different kinds of plastic and their effective recycling.

Gino ColombiniFerruccio Laviani
The Italian designer Gino Colombini became technical director of Kartell in 1953. Established by the chemical engineer Giulio Castelli in 1949, Kartell has always specialized in making articles of plastic, remaining to the present day a leading design firm working with this material. Kartell transforms utilitarian objects for everyday use into plastic objects notable for beauty of form. Gino Colombini designed many of these household objects, experimenting with the possibilities of the material and revolutionizing the small, reasonably priced everyday things so they were no longer drab and colorless but instead colorful and modern. Gino Colombini’s designs include a carpet beater (1957), a lemon squeezer (1958), wash basins, salad colanders, and lunch boxes. In 1959 Colombini designed a scoop with a long, upright handle so that it was no longer necessary to bend down over a dustpan and brush while cleaning. A particularly well known Gino Colombini design is his round umbrella stand (1965), made of ABS plastic with a steel ashtray as an added accessory. Gino Colombini was technical director at Kartell until 1960. He was awarded the Compasso d’Oro for his Kartell designs in 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, and 1960.

Care & Maintenance

Simple care is needed for the maintenance of Kartell products to retain the original features of the materials.

PLASTIC MATERIALS
Cleaning Use a soft damp cloth with soap or a liquid detergent, preferably diluted with water. Do not use acetone, trichloroethylene, ammonia or other corrosive plastic cleaners. Avoid ethyl alcohol, which dulls the surface. We recommend always using a damp cloth to prevent plastic surfaces from becoming charged with static electricity which attracts dust. Also avoid abrasive solvents, cleaning powders and creams, steel wool or rough sponge cloths.

Use Do not drag objects across the plastic surface, even if it has a scratch resistant finish, since sharp objects can damage the plastic just as they would damage wood or metal. Do not place very hot plates or pots directly on the surface, but always use a cloth or trivet.

WOOD
Cleaning As with plastic surfaces, use a soft damp cloth. Do not use alcohol or other spot removers. For a deeper cleaning use a little nonabrasive liquid detergent and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Dry the surface well with a soft cloth. Never use acetone, trichloroethylene or
ammonia.

Use Moisture in wood can cause swelling which is normal in a natural material. Our woods hold up well under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Slight color variations from one piece of wood to another are normal and these tend to disappear with time. Wood can change color over time. To delay this, it is best to avoid placing it in direct sunlight.

METALS
Cleaning Normal soil on a steel or aluminum surface, whether natural or painted, should be removed with luke-warm water and a liquid household cleaner using a soft cloth or chamois. Never use cleaning powders, abrasive or steel wool pads, which can cause scratching, or liquid
detergents that contain chlorine or its derivatives such as bleach or muriatic acid.

Use Avoid spilling grapefruit juice, cola, salt and coffee on metal surfaces. These can cause indelible stains. To remove black marks on aluminum chair legs, products especially made for steel finishes or non-abrasive car polishes are recommended.
