Eames Soft Pad Management Chair
When Charles and Ray Eames first designed their Aluminum Group outdoor furniture for the J. Irwin Miller house, they developed an iconic design made with an aluminum base and a suspension "seat pocket." Just over a decade later, they decided to extend the design by adding luxurious cushions that would keep the sitter comfortable for hours at a time. With this evolution came a new name: the Soft Pad Collection. The Soft Pad Management Chair is lightweight and timeless, and it includes these features:
- A cast aluminum base.
- A suspension back.
- Comfortable cushions for the back and seat.
From the home to the office, the Soft Pad Management Chair has a classic yet modern aesthetic that will suit any environment.
This management chair from the Eames Soft Pad line—an extension of the Aluminum Group by Charles and Ray Eames—offers the same sculptural shape as its predecessor but with the luxury of cushioned comfort. It features an adjustable 5-star base along with new finishes and premium materials, making it a standout in workspaces, conference areas, and home offices.

The Eames Soft Pad Management Chair takes the side chair up a notch by adding attractive and comfortable polished aluminum arms, casters, a five-star tilt/swivel base, and a more expansive look. It can do everything that the side chair does, fit into almost every space that chair does, and do it just a little bit better if comfort is a big factor. The addition of arms to the chair takes away slightly from the impressive profile of the side version, and it makes the chair a bit larger, but you gain whole vistas of comfort and support from it. No longer will your arms dangle by your side or have to rest on tables and desks; with the Management Chair, you can simply recline and relax, arms rested at your side. The look of the two chairs is otherwise very similar.
The Eames Soft Pad Management Chair has a full, comfortable pad on the seat, and two shorter pads, equally comfortable, on the seat back. Both of them help to keep the user in good posture and good health, not to mention good comfort. The management version of the chair is definitely meant to be a work chair primarily, although it serves very well in home and can do everything in that arena that the side chair can (especially if glides are chosen). Because it's office oriented, this is a chair that helps the user to focus and be more productive by keeping them as comfortable as possible. The pads, armrests, and the rich materials of the leather and aluminum keep the user supported and comfortable. All of those things contribute to a work state thankfully uninterrupted by much needed stretching sessions, and help to prevent numb limbs. This is the same thing today's ultra-high tech ergonomic chairs try to do, and Charles and Ray Eames were doing it in 1969, over 40 years ago.
In the home, this chair can go everywhere that the side chair can, and offers a bit more comfort than the side chair does. Underneath the kitchen or dining room table, in the living room, in the bedroom or behind the desk in a home office set up; all of these places can use some class, some comfort, and some inimitable style, and the Eames Soft Pad Management Chair offers that up in spades. While oriented toward the office (hence the name), this is the "renaissance man" of the Soft Pad Group. It can go most anywhere, it can do most anything, and it can do it well with an edge of classic design and historicity provided by Charles and Ray Eames.
In the office, this chair can literally do anything. Need a boardroom chair? You've got it. Need a meeting room chair? A desk chair? A chair for the waiting room? A chair with rollers or a chair without (you have the option)? You can get the chair you need for all of those tasks when you get yourself an Eames Soft Pad Management Chair. It's beautiful, it's very comfortable, and it can help sustain you through long day and long meetings. It's nearly the perfect office chair, because it's so elastic in function and so unyielding in its near-perfect design.
Care and Maintenance
With regular care and maintenance, your Herman Miller product will provide many years of superior performance and satisfaction.
For normal cleaning, vacuum or dust frequently with a clean, dry cloth. If leather is soiled, it can be wiped with a damp soft cloth and a lather of any mild soap and a minimum amount of lukewarm water. Do not spot clean leather; clean the entire surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
For spots and spills, wipe excess liquid immediately with a clean cloth or sponge; let the leather air dry. If the spot is still visible, further cleaning may be necessary. Sponge the entire surface—seat, back, or chair arm—with clean, lukewarm water. Let the leather air dry; never use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry leather.
For stubborn spots and stains, apply a mild, nonabrasive soap solution with a clean, wet sponge. Rinse well and let air dry. For butter, oil, or grease, wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let the remainder of the oil dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.
Do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, oils, furniture polishes, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, detergents, or ammonia on leather; they will ruin the finish, causing it to become sticky and cracked.
