    Design Story

      Freedom Story

“With the airplane you learn a lot about how to deal with the air, for a chair you have to learn a lot about how to deal with the body, and what the body needs, wants, indicates it needs. And that's the way, ultimately after some ups and downs, I ended up designing [Freedom].”
      — Niels Diffrient, Designer

Inspired to create a revolutionary office chair that adjusted automatically to whoever sat in it, Niels Diffrient designed the Freedom chair. Diffrient had always had a passion for aviation, growing up drawing and building model planes. In his 2002 TED talk, in which he shared the processes behind the design of Freedom, he explained how the disciplines connected.

      Humanscale History

“If a design solves a functional problem as simply and elegantly as possible, it will not only have superior performance, but its aesthetic will be timeless as well.”
      — Robert King, Humanscale Founder and CEO

Humanscale was founded in 1983 with a mission to develop high-performance ergonomic office tools that would solve functional problems as straightforwardly and gracefully as possible. Beginning with its first product — an anti-glare filter that improved the visibility of monochrome monitors in the early 1980s — the company has methodically designed some of the most innovative products in the industry. In the late 1990s, Humanscale made a significant mark with its introduction of high-performance articulating keyboard systems, offering effortless one-touch adjustability while eliminating the knee-clearance issues associated with competing solutions. Today, the company is still the leader in that product category.

In 1999, Humanscale turned heads in the contract furniture industry with the introduction of the Freedom chair, designed by ergonomics pioneer Niels Diffrient. Combining unprecedented functionality with minimal manual controls, the chair broke new ground by utilizing dynamic mechanisms that respond to the requirements of each individual user automatically. Since its introduction in 1999, Freedom has won 10 international design awards and has been featured in virtually every major design publication.

Building on the success of the Freedom chair, in 2004 Diffrient designed the Liberty chair, which featured a tri-panel configuration of non-stretch mesh that provides tailor-made lumbar support without external devices.
